1 Corinthians 15:33 Good Character #273
The topic from the blog post I shared last week, “You are Under the Influence,” has been on my heart so much lately. I just can’t stop thinking about how we must understand that everything and everyone we surround ourselves with has an influence on us. And of course the opposite holds true, we too have an influence on those around us.
In that blog post I mentioned this quote that says, “Show me your friends and I will show you your future.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 says it like this, “So stop fooling yourselves! Evil companions will corrupt good morals and character.”
What if we as Christian stopped fooling ourselves? You and I can make all the excuses we want for how we spend our time or who we hang out with but it’s time to stop being misled or deceived because at the end of the day, we are under the influence!
Another translation of 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “bad friends will destroy you.” Another translation says, “associating with bad people will ruin decent people.”
If you looked at the qualities your closest friends have, then the reality is your qualities are probably very similar to theirs. If your friends go out and party every Friday night, then you are probably doing the same. If they bash their husbands during girls night, then you most likely are too. Maybe these examples are extreme and you can’t relate but at the end of the day if you are surrounding yourself with bad company, it is making a negative impact on you.
This isn’t just about your close circle of friends because you and I can be influenced by so many different avenues including acquaintances as well as those you follow on social media.
I don’t know about you, but I refuse to be deceived or misled. I have made a very conscious decision to only surround myself with friends who will encourage me, speak God’s truths to me, guide me with Godly counsel, believe with me, declare God’s promises over my life with me, cry and laugh with me, and ultimately whether I am in my lowest of lows or highest of highs will stick by my side and love me.
What about you? Who you hang out with is a big indicator of how your future will be. So, my question to you today is who do you surround yourself with? Who are your friends? Are your friends encouraging you? Are they influencing you to be a better person? What bad company do you need to stop hanging out with? You might be one friend away from changing your destiny and future!
