1 John 1:8-10 Forgive Our Sins #245
The past few weeks I have shared from 1 John 1:5-7 and today I want to continue on with verse 8-10 which says, “If we boast that we have no sin, we’re only fooling ourselves and are strangers to the truth. But if we freely admit our sins when his light uncovers them, he will be faithful to forgive us every time. God is just to forgive us our sins because of Christ, and he will continue to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we claim that we’re not guilty of sin when God uncovers it with his light, we make him a liar and his word is not in us.”
1 John 1:5-7 covered the power of walking in the light with Jesus. And when we decide to walk in the light, the blood of Jesus continues to cover our sin. Verse 8 goes on to say that anyone who boasts that they have no sin, is in turn fooling themselves! It’s obvious, we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory (Romans 3:23). However, we can’t just sit in that sin when it’s revealed, we have to do something about it! For the Christian who freely admits that they are a sinner, doors will be opened for restoration to happen and God will forgive every sin, every time. Why? Because the cross paid for every sin. And, it’s not confession that brings forgiveness, it’s the cross. However confession is important because it removes any blockages from walking in light and it brings intimacy with the Father.
Have you ever thought you had to revisit past sins or ask for forgiveness a certain amount of times before being cleansed? Well that is not the case. What we know from this passage is that when one denies their sin, God can’t help them, but when one confesses before the Lord, intimacy and restoration happen. In order for a person to be cleansed, it’s going to take acknowledging and admitting that they sinned to begin with. What do you identify the most with? Are you making God out to be a liar by hiding behind your sinful ways or are you choosing to acknowledge that the blood shed on the cross covers it all?
