05 Nov 1 John 2:9-11 Blinded by Darkness #248
For the past month or so I have been sharing from 1 John and I am continuing today with 1 John 2:9-11 which says, “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.”
1 John 1 is all about having a relationship with God, but this passage is all about having a relationship with other people. I find this passage so timely with the elections because how often do we see awful comments made about a person on social media or the news? All the time! Especially around this time of year. But you know what, all 6 billion people on this Earth are a gift from God and every person on Earth is God’s son or daughter. Which means you should have no hate in your heart towards anyone, even if you voted against them, and if you do, it’s because you are walking in the darkness. Ultimately what it boils down to is if you are walking in darkness you have no love in your heart. Instead of walking in light and love, your heart is hard and you have hate in it. Yikes!
We know that God is light which means that the enemy is darkness. And the only reason there is hate in this world is because people are blinded by darkness, or in other words, they are overshadowed by the enemy. Does anyone really think that people who are blinded by darkness will get along? Of course not! Because if a person’s heart is hard and filled with hate then they won’t be able to love their brother or sister. Which is why we as Christians have to make sure we are walking in the light and loving each and every person around us.
There is no sugar-coating this verse. If you call yourself a Christian and live as a Christian but hate those around you, then you are living in darkness. When you examine your life and your heart, what would you say? Are you living in light or in darkness?
