Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are excited about 2019! I enjoyed taking the first week off from blogging and social media and now I’m ready to dive back in!

What better way to start the New Year than with a verse that we have heard “from the start.” 1 John 3:11 says, “The beautiful message you’ve heard right from the start is that we should walk in self-sacrificing love toward one another.”

This message, that we have heard from the start, is about love! John 13:34 says, “So I give you now a new commandment: Love each other just as much as I have loved you.” We are called to love others as much as Jesus has loved us. Wow! That might seem hard and it will be if you operate from your own flesh, but if you operate out of the Spirit living within you, then following this command will come naturally from the overflow of God within you. That is of course if you have stored love within your heart! Luke 6:45 says, “Out of the virtue stored in their hearts, good and upright people will produce good fruit. But out of the evil hidden in their hearts, evil ones will produce what is evil.” What a reminder that we must store up virtue in our hearts so we can release it to those around us.

The best way to display your Christian faith is to demonstrate it and the best way to demonstrate your Christian faith is by loving others. So, what can you do to focus on loving those around you? I want to remind you that a simple smile in the grocery can display God’s love. So can opening the door for someone at work or cooking your roommate or spouse a meal. And perhaps there is more depth to it, like offering to pray over your neighbor who needs it. Whatever it is, choose to love others with the same love that Christ has shown you.
