1 John 4:1-3 False Teachers #258

1 John 4:1-3

Today I am sharing a longer passage because I felt like all three verses needed to be shared at the same time. 1 John 4:1-3 says, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”

In this passage John gives us a warning against false teaching, a topic I have become more passionate about over the past year. This passage seems so important, especially with the access we as Christians have to so many teachings, sermons and churches. There is a wide variety of messages being shared right now and if you and I are not rooted in truth and aware that there are several spirits, we can be very easily deceived.

After warning us, John tells us exactly how we as believers can know if a prophet is true. Verse 2 says, the Spirit must acknowledge that Jesus came in the flesh from God. God will never contradict himself so the Holy Spirit can never speak something other than what God’s Word says. Do you know many teachings are false because they don’t acknowledge  that Jesus is God? That is why religions like Mormon, Jehovah Witness, etc are so deceitful. Their teaching sounds appealing but they do not believe that Jesus is really God.

Verse 3 goes on to say, “this is the spirit of the antichrist.” Yikes! The antichrist is already here and we need to be made aware of it. Anything that goes against the truth is the antichrist! Remember this: the enemy can’t create, he can only pervert. So what does he do? He perverts the word by opposing it through false teachers.

Are you aware that there are many false prophets that are leading people astray? What teachings are you listening to and following? Are you testing what you hear to make sure it lines up with what God’s Word says? When you have time this week, make sure to read 1 John 4:1-3 and ask Father to give you clarity and wisdom.

Thank you for this post.. You are spot on. We need to be very careful…
I feel sad for people like Jehova Witnesses bc they feel like they OWN the truth. And I have told them what the Bible says but only the Holy Spirit convicts.
    Have a blessed day,
    Love from the netherlands
