colossians 4

Colossians 4:6 Spoken Words #235

Is anyone else astonished with the way people talk to each other? I know I am not the only one who has had those jaw dropping moment when overhearing (or reading) conversations between two people.

As I was reading Colossians last week, Colossians 4:6 made me stop in my tracks. It says, “Let every word you speak be drenched with grace and tempered with truth and clarity. For then you will be prepared to give a respectful answer to anyone who asks about your faith.” To backup a little bit, the beginning of Colossians 4 starts with Paul instructing to have a life of prayer and when you read through verse 6 it talks about your interaction with the world, which goes to show that what you do both privately in prayer and how you treat the outside world matter. I am sure that is not that big of a revelation to most, but I think in the context, still very important to note.

Colossians 4:5 reveals the importance of interacting with the world. It is so powerful and says, “Walk in the wisdom of God as you live before the unbelievers, and make it your duty to make him known.” Wow! It is your duty to make God known! And then verse 6 tells you what you need to do to make God known.  You need to speak with grace, truth and clarity.

The Aramaic word for grace in this verse could be translated to “compassion”, so in other words, “let every word you speak be drenched with compassion.” I also love how the verse points out that when your words are filled with grace, truth and clarity that you will be able to not only give an answer to anyone who asks about your faith, but you will be able to give a respectful answer. I think we can all agree there is a massive difference between speaking with respect versus speaking with disrespect.

Are you words drenched with grace, compassion, truth and clarity? Are you speaking with respect? Are you making it your duty to make Father known? I hope that these verses in Colossians challenge you to share Christ with unbelievers and speak words that line up with what verse 6 commands!
