Exodus 34:6 – Yahweh – #116

Exodus 34 tells about Moses meeting with God up on the mountain. In Exodus 34:5 the Lord descended down in a glory cloud (can you imagine) to declare truth to Moses. Exodus 34:6 says, “The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.”

God made a point to reveal Himself to Moses. While many people think that God is full of anger and wrath, His character is the very opposite of that. Just as this passage says the Lord is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love.

While this verse focuses on these attributes, the truth is that we could go on and on with more attributes and still wouldn’t be able to describe the fullness of God. Not only is He full of love and mercy, but He is always slow to anger. Unlike many people, He does not have a temper and His patience is so great that He will never become angry or impatient with those who believe in Him. Does that give you hope when you mess up?

God is full of mercy, grace, compassion, faithfulness, forgiveness, and justice. He abounds in love. If you are struggling with who God is and what He is like, spend time meditating on this verse! Praise Him not only for what He has done, but also praise Him for who He is.

I love that you are diving into the Old Testament. “God is full of mercy, grace, compassion, faithfulness, forgiveness, and justice.” really stood out to me! Thank you so much for your insight on this verse!

Oh, praise the Lord for this verse! What would we do if He were not slow to anger with us? He has proven His abundant mercy to me so many, many times throughout my Christian journey. I also love the verse in Lamentations that reminds us that His compassions fail not and His mercies are new every morning. It is so good that they are, because each day it seems I need His mercy more. He is a wonderful, loving Lord, and He is oh, so worthy of our love in return! Thank you for sharing this amazing verse, Caroline!

Such a good point. I need to take a lesson (or many lessons!) from God and be less impatient and slower to anger!

It is so encouraging to know that God loves me deep. He’s faithful. Forgiving. Graceful. He gives me what no one else can. 🙂

One of my favorite verses! It reminds me of the Hillsong song, “I look to Yahweh, Yahweh”!

I agree that it’s very important to praise God for who He is, not just for what He has done! It’s very easy for me to pray “thank-you for saving me; thank-you for loving me; thank-you for helping me” etc but lately God’s been reminding me to also pray “You are goodness – thank-you; You are 100% trustworthy – thank-you” etc. I mean, imagine if our husbands only thanked us for what we did for them and never just said “I love you – thank-you for being you, you’re beautiful, I like you” etc!
