Matthew 11:28-30 Come to Me #205
Oh my gosh! I can’t believe I have been sharing verses every Monday since April of 2013. Well today I am throwing it back and re-sharing the 1st verse I ever shared. Really though, 4.5 year ago? That is crazy! I am not sure if I will continue to share verses on Monday or not, but for purposes of today, I am re-sharing Matthews 11:28-30 which says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Can we just first point out how Jesus starts this passage? “Come to Me.” He is waiting, for you, no matter how weary and burdened you are, to come to him. Isn’t that just the kindest invitation? And notice who he is talking to? He’s talking to those who are weary and burdened, not those who are full of strength and pride. He’s talking about the person who is carrying their own burdens as well as the person who is carrying the burdens from others.
And that person? Jesus instructs that the weary person who comes to him should take his yoke upon them. Yokes are used to attach a team of oxen together to plow a field or pull a heavy load. It wouldn’t work with just one yoke, but there must be two to keep it balanced, with the stronger one in front. In the same way, Jesus wants you to join with him so that he can carry your burdens as he leads the way.
This world will tell you to figure out your problems on your own and will encourage you to bear your own burdens. But Jesus? When you choose to share your life with Jesus the yoke will be easier and the burden you carry will be much lighter. He has so much to give. He is gentle and when you approach him, he will give you rest. Real rest. Meaningful rest. Come to him and you will find rest for your soul.
