Matthew 1:23 God With Us #208
In honor of celebrating the birth of Jesus, I wanted to share Matthew 1:20-23, which says, “As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. ‘Joseph, son of David,’ the angel said, ‘do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: ‘Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ”God is with us.’”
In verses 20-22, the angel declared to Joseph that Mary’s child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and that it would be a son, named Jesus. Joseph must not have been aware that Mary was pregnant by the Spirit and this is why God had to send an angel. The conception and birth of Jesus was a supernatural event, way beyond anything our minds can comprehend. I mean, can you imagine being Mary? If I were her, I would be so very thankful that God sent an angel to help explain the situation. It just shows how gentle the Father is and how much he cares.
Jesus means, ‘the Lord Saves’. The whole reason Jesus came to this earth was to save us from our sin. Without him? We are full of sin. But Jesus came to meet us right where we are, in our sin, to bring salvation and save us from it all! How powerful is that?
Matthew 1:23, the last part of this verse, fulfilled the prophecy that was spoken in Isaiah 7:14. Isn’t it amazing that every word God speaks, he always fulfills? Jesus is the Immanuel, which is translated “God with us.” Even today, thousands of years later, Jesus is still ever so present. He is the great Immanuel and he is absolutely with us. I hope during this Christmas season each and every one of you know that Jesus came not only to save you from your sins, but also to be your Immanuel.
