The weather was so beautiful the other night and rarely do I get the chance to spend time outside during the week so I took the opportunity to go on a walk. I took my phone and headphones as I always do, but I felt like God was telling me to be still. So, I turned off my music. It was so nice to enjoy the beauty of the evening, the quietness around me and to listen to what God wanted me to hear. As so often, my conversation with Him is one way. Me talking and Him listening. But, how often do I stop to be in silence? This is hard for me as my mind constantly wanders, but it was during my walk that God put this verse on my heart:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension
I couldn’t get this statement out of my mind. Peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension (NASB). This is the peace we are currently feeling. The peace that we can not explain. The peace that only comes from knowing and believing God. This is different then the peace the world seeks, which is based on lack of conflict. Instead, God given peace is present during conflict. It’s a peace only available to us when we have a relationship with Christ. A peace that can be found during trials of infertility and a long distance marriage. A peace that is found when we know God is in control. A peace that is found when we trust that God works all things for our good. It’s a peace God gives us that can overcomes any doubt, fear or anxiety.
How did we find that peace? As verse 6 mentions, we obtain peace by bringing our worries, anxieties and trials to God. When we do this, He gives us peace that we can’t find anywhere else.
I recognize and am so thankful, that despite our circumstances, God has blessed us with an overwhelming peace. One that we can’t explain, but one we know has been given to us by Him. One of the sweetest gifts we could ever receive.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.- John 14:27
Be still and know that I am God – Psalm 46:10
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you – 2 Thessalonians 3:16
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ – Romans 5:1
