Romans 6:16 Choose Your Master #272
Romans 6, which I have been sharing about the past several weeks, reminds us that grace triumphs over sin. In fact, it says sin is dead and it’s former identity has been removed, as I shared here.
Today I want to skip forward to Romans 6:16 which says, “Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.”
I also want to share the Passion Translation of this verse which says, “Don’t you realize that grace frees you to choose your own master? But choose carefully, for you surrender yourself to become a servant—bound to the one you choose to obey. If you choose to love sin, it will become your master, and it will own you and reward you with death. But if you choose to love and obey God, he will lead you into perfect righteousness.”
This might seem confusing, but many Christians can easily take advantage of the grace that has been offered. After all, grace paves the way for us to enter into a relationship with Jesus and once we know we are going to heaven, then who cares if we sin, right?
Yes, grace is a gift for us, but it’s not one to be taken advantage of. Grace has been extended and has made a way for us to choose our own master. Although Jesus paid for our sins to be removed, in our free-will we can choose to seek what we want. We can seek sin which will lead to death or we can choose to obey God which will lead to righteousness.
This verse reminds me of Proverbs 18:21. There are two options in Proverbs 18:21: you can speak life or death, it can’t be both. Romans 6:16 also presents two options: you can choose to love sin or you can choose to love God. You can only have one master, and it’s up to you to choose which one.
Although Jesus paid the price for you to be free from sin, it’s up to you to choose freedom. Notice the passion translation gives a warning, “choose carefully.” What or who is your master? What are you a slave to? Sin or God?
