Romans 6:6 Former Identity Gone #269

I could easily cover every verse in Romans 5 and Romans 6 because each word is full of power and truth, but today I’m going to skip forward and share Romans 6:6 which says, “Could it be any clearer that our former identity is now and forever deprived of its power? For we were co-crucified with him to dismantle the stronghold of sin within us, so that we would not continue to live one moment longer submitted to sin’s power.”

To back up and provide some context since I hopped right into Romans 6:6, the prior verses speak of the triumph of grace over sin. Romans 6:4-5 says that not only were we dead with Christ, but we were resurrected too! What a beautiful truth that is so often looked over. And verse 6? I just love the statement that our former identity is deprived of its power, both now and forever. Your slavery to sin was broken on the cross. You are now dead to sin, completely and forever. There is a footnote in my Bible that says your sin was not suppressed by the cross; it was eliminated. Amen!

The power of sin has been broken over your life but if you continue to live by your soul, or flesh, instead of your spirit, then the world and the devil will continue to pull you towards sin. Remember the only authority the enemy has in your life is the authority you give him.

Has Romans 6:6 played out in your life? Are you living as though your former identity was forever deprived of its power or did you give the power that Jesus paid for back to your former self? You are a new creation in Christ! Don’t let the power of sin which was broken on the cross be a part of your life any longer. You have authority to live in your new identity, so what is stopping you from living in the fullness of the payment that was made for you?
