Romans 9 - God's Kindness and Mercy

Romans 9:16 God’s Mercy #196

I love reading scripture, but I really love reading it when it stops me in my tracks. That usually happens when I am in Romans, especially chapter 4 and 8 of the Passion Translation. However, today’s verse I want to share is from Romans 9:16 and says, “Again, this proves that God’s choice doesn’t depend on how badly someone wants it or tries to earn it, but it depends on God’s kindness and mercy.”

That will stop you and make you think, am I right? So many people believe the lie that if they want something, then they have to earn it. But that is the beautiful thing about being a Christian; it’s exactly the opposite. Your salvation in Jesus Christ can’t be earned, but it’s a free gift. And all the other blessings from God are the exact same way; they are freely given.

God’s choice to enter a relationship isn’t dependent on what you have done. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, how good of a friend or family member you are, how many people you have helped or what organizations you are involved in. None of it matters.

When you truly know the character of God, you will understand why he extends his mercy to you. It’s because he’s a loving and gracious Father. The reality is that as sinners, we deserve death on a cross. But, the truth is our sin is exactly what Jesus paid for. And in every situation and circumstance God says, “you know what, I’m not going to give you what you deserve.” Aren’t you so thankful for that? Aren’t you so thankful that you don’t have to earn your way into heaven or earn your way into a relationship with Jesus? Aren’t you so thankful for his mercy?

While this verse has to do with salvation, the same holds true in all areas of life. You don’t have to earn your way into a new job. You don’t have to earn your way into finding a spouse. You don’t have to earn your way into becoming pregnant. You don’t have to earn your way into getting healed. Instead, God shows his mercy and kindness. God desires to bless you in his timing and he doesn’t do it because you are a good person or you deserve it, he does it because he’s a good Father who always has your best interest in mind.

I love the truth in this post. I read this definition once and really liked it: Grace – getting what we don’t deserve; Mercy – not getting what we do deserve.
