Putting God First With Tithing

Today I am talking about tithing and I can’t tell you how excited I am about it. I am hoping to convey the importance of tithing and what scripture says about it. Tithing is a kingdom-principle and one I wish was talked about more. One of God’s commands on being faithful and being a follower of is to tithe. The word tithe is translated “10%.”

Deuteronomy 14:23 says “The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives.”

Doesn’t that verse speak volumes? Tithing is a heart issue and the purpose of it is for you to put God first in your life. Matthew 6:21 says, “for your heart will always pursue what you value as your treasure.”  Remember, God is always after your heart and when you tithe it shows Father that you value and treasure him. God wants to know that you consider him your top priority and that you love and honor him above all else. When you tithe it shows your faithfulness and loyalty to the Lord and in return he blesses you for your faith in him.

Tithing also shows God that you recognize that all gifts come from him. All you have and own is all God’s and the only reason you have anything to begin with is because he is a generous Father. When you tithe, you are giving him back what belongs to him. Because he is so generous, you are able to keep 90%! Isn’t that a precious way to think about it?

Always remember that it is the Lord your God who gives you the ability to produce wealth. Deuteronomy 8:18

God always has an abundant mindset and I personally believe that if you tithe, he will absolutely always take care of you and not only take care of you but bless you in abundant ways. For me personally, God has been so faithful in this area of my life. Remember when I quit my job and worried about our finances? Guess what, we continued to tithe and he has continued to take care of us. I love how sweet and creative he is with blessing Colby and I and I know he will do the exact same thing for you.

You might be thinking, “Caroline, you don’t understand my situation.” You are right, I don’t know your situation. But I can guess that if you don’t already tithe, it’s either to lack of knowledge about the topic or that you feel like you can’t afford to tithe. You might be someone who is living paycheck to paycheck and barely getting by and therefore you don’t feel like you are able to tithe. But, my encouragement to you? You can’t afford not to tithe.

So, take a look at how you spend your money. What if instead of spending it on yourself, you gave the first portion you received to the Lord? The principle of tithing holds true whether you are making minimum wage or brining in six figures. Remember, you can’t afford not to give God what is already his and he isn’t concerned with how or where you give, but it’s the heart behind the giving that is most important to him. He is faithful! Trust Him in this act of giving. Expectations of receiving back should not be your motivation for giving, so if your heart is not in the right place to tithe, read scriptures on tithing and then pray and ask that he changes it.

The exciting thing about tithing is it’s an investment – not only in him, but in furthering his kingdom. How you spend your money and your time shows what you place your value in and if you want to step into all God has for you in terms of your finances, then start by giving him 10% of what is already his.

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Do you have a testimony about tithing? Are you ready to say yes to giving to God what is already his? I want to challenge you to start tithing 10% and then I want to hear how God shows up!

Such a touchy topic for some, but such a reminder that we have to entrust what is Gods TO God.
Good for you tackling this subject!

Year after year when we receive our tithing statement at church, we become so overwhelmed with how God has blessed us. This past year we had ended up tithing my ENTIRE take home pay. We did not miss a dime of it and were completely surprised! God is so so faithful to take care of us. It is ALL His anyways!

I agree with the comment above. It gets to where you don’t even miss it!! None of it is ours anyway and you certainly can’t take it with you! We are so blessed already.

One thing I recently though about with tithing is how the money we give to our church is used to support missionaries around the world and send people on missions trips. Wouldn’t it be neat to get to heaven and see all the people who were blessed by our tithe that we never knew about or realized? It puts it into perspective, and it really is necessary to give back to God what he’s given to us, even if it does feel hard to “give away” so much money.
