You Have Not Because You Ask Not
Just the other day I went to the store to pick up one specific item and when I got to the aisle where I knew I would find the item, the item was out of stock. It was a huge bummer as I needed a large quantity. I was tempted to leave the store because I figured there was no way they would have any in the back, but then I thought, why not ask?
So I did and to my surprise, the gentleman at the store went directly to the back and brought me a whole case of what I needed. A brand new, untouched box all for me! It was in that moment that the Father gently reminded that the only reason I was able to leave with what I wanted was because I asked.
James 4:2 says, “You have not because you ask not.” Another translation says, “you don’t have the things you want, because you don’t pray for them.”
How easily is it to forget this truth? Some of the things that we desire the most are some of the very things that we have stopped asking and believing for. Can you relate to that? Is there a dream that you let die because you thought it was taking too long to happen? Is there something that was really important to you, but that you stopped praying about?
Remember, what you pray reflects what you believe about God. Meaning, if you pray big bold prayers, it’s because you have had a revelation that you have a big God, but if you pray tiny, teeny prayers, it’s probably because you don’t realize who Father is and what he is capable of blessing you with. But not praying at all? Well you can’t expect to get anything if you don’t even ask.
Father doesn’t want this to be a formula. He isn’t as concerned about you asking for something as he is about you talking to him about the things you want. Just like any earthly parent wants their child to communicate with them, especially about their dreams and wants, your Heavenly Father is just the same.
What dreams do you need to resurrect? What prayers do you need to start praying? I would have never walked away from that store with what I wanted had I not asked the clerk for what I needed and you too might never get what you want if you don’t start asking!
