My 7th Half Marathon
Just a few weekends ago I participated in my 7th half marathon, the McKinney Half-Marathon which was hosted by Get Racing. After not running since March and not having a race since that time too, I had the genius idea to sign up for a half-marathon just two weeks before the race date! Ha, please do not take notes from me about how to participate in a race the proper way. If you have read up on any of my prior races, then you probably won’t be surprised that I signed up so last-minute. I have never really been one to “train” for races.
With that being said, I was able to squeeze in 3 walks before the race and that turned out to be sufficient training for me. Also, notice I said walks 🙂 For the actual race, I ended up walking half and running half. I basically did intervals between the two over the course of 13.1 miles. I was hurting, that was for sure. Mainly my hips, my knees and my feet, but I would have gotten down on my knees and crawled if I had to. I wasn’t going to let the pain stop me from finishing! My goal was to finish under 3 hours (yes, I move slow) and I managed to finish at 2 hours and 39 minutes which I was happy with.
The last half-marathon I raced in was in April 2017 and Colby and I actually raced in it together. Colby was actually out-of-town for this race, so I went to the race by myself, which let me tell you, is just never the same. It’s so nice to have him with me to drop me off, cheer me on, take pictures, etc, but alas, I managed! It really is so much more fun to have someone there, and even more fun to have someone to race with!
As far as the course, this was by far my one of my favorite races because the course was through parks which gave such pretty views of nature. Some of the races I have done are just along a boring road which is not nearly as motivating. I also appreciated that each racer got a pull-over to wear and a nice medal, which I prefer much more than a bag full of random flyers. And, I was texted my finishing time right as a I crossed the finish line. That was definitely a first for me. How is that for up-to-date technology? Oh, and did I mention that we had actual bathrooms to use, not just a porta potty. It seems silly, but it it’s the little things, like an actual real bathroom, inside away from the cold weather that truly makes a difference.
I definitely hope I can do this race next year as it was one of my favorites. Have you done a half-marathon before?
