08 Nov Good Guide
I have made a few posts (BPA, Triclosan and Sodium Laureth Sulfate) now on how the connection between the products we use and our health. Regardless if it’s for fertility or our health in general, it’s a topic I’m passionate about and believe needs more awareness.
After my last post on Sodium Laureth Sulfate, I got some questions on what products would be good to use, so I thought I would share this website, Goodguide.com. The site ranks your beauty and household products for health, environmental, and social performance. It’s a pretty incredible website. They rank everything including food, personal care products, clothing, etc. It’s been a wealth of information.
For us personally, I’m making our our own face wash, body wash, and eye makeup remover. Even though I’m a Crest Kid at heart, I recently started buying Tom’s toothpaste and Tom’s deodorant. Until, I realized there is SLS in the toothpaste, seriously Tom’s? Ugh! It amazes me how a products that says ‘natural’ and that advertises itself that way, clearly isn’t. I haven’t found an alternative, but Charity over at The Word of a Nerd posted some great ideas the other day, including ideas for homemade toothpaste. For our shampoo and conditioner we have been using Aubrey Organics.
I realize there are probably even better and healthier options out there, but I have found these affordable and much better than what we had been using before. It’s a work in progress and I still have a lot of work to do, especially for my makeup, but I’m slowly converting all of our products to ones that are healthier.
Hope everyone finds this site helpful and informative. Happy Friday!

Posted at 09:52h, 08 NovemberThank you so much for sharing! I consider myself an environmental person, but it’s always good to be reminded because it is just so important not only for our health, but also for the environment! I’ve been using bert’s bees shampoo & conditioner and I really like it.

Posted at 11:17h, 08 NovemberGreat post! I, too, have been trying to go completely organic and natural. Pricey, but so worth it. I actually use the JASON brand toothpastes. I was skeptical at first, but it’s actually pretty good!

Posted at 16:08h, 08 NovemberWhat a wonderful resource! Thank you for sharing! I especially like getting your specific thoughts and recommendations for products. Think you’d share your recipe for homemade face wash and makeup remover?

Posted at 17:01h, 08 NovemberHave you tried Earthpaste brand toothpaste? That is what I get for my husband, and I make a homemade version of that for me. The base of it is clay, and there is no fluoride (I originally started looking into it when I wanted to get away from fluoride because of the impact on sperm). You can get it on Amazon – http://www.amazon.com/Earthpaste-Amazingly-Natural-Toothpaste–Peppermint/dp/B0080L9G9C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383947859&sr=8-1&keywords=earthpaste – I order it from our coop which is even cheaper! It really is a work in progress, I have come a long way from using Crest as well! I think any little change you can make that will impact your health is worth it!

Posted at 06:54h, 09 NovemberSo glad I read your web post re: the SLS in products. Rick and I eat organic, but hadn’t made the switch yet to our products. We made the switched. We use Acure shampoo and conditioner and the lotion is Alba. We love them. Need to work on the toothpaste and deodorant next. Thanks Caroline!

Posted at 14:12h, 09 NovemberI just started following your blog on bloglovin, Caroline! I love reading your posts about all of this, because we are trying to (slowly) eliminate harmful personal care products. We’ve already started eating clean and avoiding many things for consumption (caffeine, alcohol, refined sugar, etc.), but personal care products are next. We will just replace them as we run out of the ones we are currently using.

Posted at 20:27h, 10 NovemberThanks for the great tips! We always used all natural stuff growing up, and I remember loving Aubrey Organics. One thing I keep wanting to try is homemade shampoo with baking soda and apple cider vinegar as conditioner. I’ve heard it works really well!

Posted at 14:49h, 12 NovemberOh wow I agree with Emily, I think I have found my newest addiction too. Skin deep already has my whole family thinking I am crazy. Lol! I am definitely going to be checking out the good guide. You know there is a blog that has tons of nice recipes for making your own lotions, shave soap etc. I will email you the link as I have been to lazy to try anything yet but maybe you might find the time and let me know how it works?! Thanks for sharing this and for giving me a shout out xo!

Posted at 01:26h, 31 JanuaryI try soooo hard to stay away from those horrible chemicals too, augh! I read the labels on everything!!! Yeah, Tom’s has some bad stuff too 🙁 Do you know of a good working, aluminum free deodorant that works good????? I use an organic deodorant, but I’m looking for better options that work better if I’m outside for a long time. I will check out the site you mentioned. Cool!!
