Ten Year Engagementversary!

Ten years ago today Colby and I got engaged! I have shared this same post every year on the blog and I will probably continue to do so in the years to come! It amazes me how quickly these posts come — I feel like I was just sharing that we were  celebrating nine years since our engagement day!

It might seem silly to some to celebrate engagements, first dates, etc, but I believe that when you are going through trials the best thing to do is to focus on the positive things in life and one of those things for me is the blessing of our marriage.

Our engagement day is such a fun day to look back on. When I think about our engagement day, my mind goes back to a state of shock. To say I was surprised was an understatement. We have lots of pictures and videos that show my reaction (thanks to the hidden photo/videographers). Don’t worry, I narrowed it down from the 900 pictures we got that day and am just sharing a handful.

The story begins with first sharing about where we went to college. I attended Baylor University and Colby went to Kansas State. We decided to go to the Baylor v. Kansas State football game, which also happened to be Baylor’s homecoming. We drove down early in the day to walk around campus, look at the homecoming floats, and enjoy the day before the game started.

Colby was very adamant about telling me where to go which is very out of character for him. He is usually easy-going, patient, and has a very go-with-the-flow type of personality. I started questioning him, including asking why he was wearing his nice shoes for a football game.

After he walked me to a very pretty area of campus, he began telling me how much he loved me, started talking about the future, and proceeded to share more mushy stuff. I was not interested in having the conversation at the time and couldn’t figure out why he was bringing up serious topics at such a random time, but before I knew it he was down on one knee asking me to marry him.

Despite the fact that the one knee is CODE for proposal, it took awhile to register what was going on. I’m not sure at what point it hit me, but I finally said YES. Two of our friends came out from behind the bushes and we continued to walk around campus as they took pictures of the two of us.

But, the surprises were not over. There was a limo waiting for Colby and I. We enjoyed a ride together with some champagne while I continued to hyperventilate and process. Before I knew it, we had arrived at an area to pick up all of my friends. Apparently he had emailed them weeks in advance to let them know what he was up to and that he would be buying football tickets for all those who could attend.

The football game got delayed because of a VERY major storm so we continued to ride around and celebrate in the limo. We were all soaked, but after the limo ride got to eat at a favorite restaurant and attend the game. To top it off Baylor beat KSU to became bowl eligible (which was a big deal for Baylor at the time).

The celebration continued the next day with more friends and both sets of our parents! Colby spent months planning including driving down the prior week to scope out the spot, being sneaky to buy the ring, and talking to my parents. What a fun day to remember!!
