Redding and Lake Tahoe

Northern California + Lake Tahoe

Colby and I got back last Sunday from a 10 day trip to Northern California, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and Napa. I have so much to cover that for today I am just going to share the first part of our trip which includes Northern California and Lake Tahoe!

Redding and Lake Tahoe

Day 1-4: Redding {Bethel}

We left Dallas on a Friday and flew into Sacramento. We rented a car and drove straight to Redding. A big reason we wanted to fly into Sacremento was to not only go to Lake Tahoe, but to go visit Bethel Church, which is in Redding, and very near and dear to our heart. It’s a church that we have been listening to and following for the past five years. And it’s one that is definitely worth flying half way across the states to visit. Thankfully our flight and everything was on time and we got to attend the Friday night service. We also attended the healing prayer, did a Sozo session and got to go to the Sunday morning and Sunday evening services as well. There are no words to express how amazing it all was and I don’t think I plan on sharing much more publicly about it, but let me just encourage that you if you don’t listen to Bethel’s sermons or worship, then it’s absolutely time to start. If you ever have a chance to go visit the church, I highly recommend it.

In Redding we stayed at the Hope Inn and it was fabulous. The owners communicated so well with us and were so sweet too! I can’t say I have ever worked with an owner of a hotel or B&B who let’s me know they are praying for me. In addition, we absolutely loved our room and bathroom… hello California King! Yes please. The Inn had a massive kitchen which was super helpful and was just a few miles from Bethel, which was perfect what we needed.

Day 2: Lassen National Park

On Saturday afternoon we drove to Lassen National Park and we did two different hikes. One was a very easy hike on flat service around Manzanita Lake. I think it was just a few miles. After that, even though it was already around 5 pm, we drove in the park towards the Lassen Peak Trail. Let’s just say that we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. The trail was a 5 mile round trip hike with a 2,000 ft elevation hike. The people who were finishing the trail were in their full winter gear. We were confused, but just kept on going up and we were in for a rude awakening. It was freezing!!! All we had was our shirts and tank and I have no idea what the temperature was, but we were so cold. And the wind was so intense. We ended up hiking on ice and snow, which was just wild considering in Redding it was 110. We didn’t stay very long at the top since it was so cold, but of course had time to snap a few pictures. I think by the time we finished the hike and drove back to Redding it was about 10 pm!

Day 3: Mt. Shasta

On Sunday after church we headed towards Mt. Shasta. It was surprisingly very hard to find a place where we could sit and swim near the lake so we spent a long time driving, but finally found an area a little off the road. It was very hot that day, but the nice thing was the water was warm enough to get in. And there weren’t many people around so we practically had the place to ourselves. We hung out there for a little bit and then headed back to town to go to the Bethel evening service.

Day 4-6: Lake Tahoe

Monday morning we left Redding and headed towards Lake Tahoe. When we got to Lake Tahoe we grabbed some food and then found a beach to hang out for the afternoon. The water was so very cold! There are no words to express how cold it was, but when someone pointed out it was melted snow, it made more sense. Thankfully the air temperature of 75ish was perfect. We had a lazy rest of the day and after going to the lake, drove to our hotel, grabbed dinner and then watched the sunset!

Day 5: Mount Tallac

Tuesday we went on another hike and once again were completely not prepared for what we were getting ourselves into. The hike was a 13 mile round trip hike, most of which was on boulders. The elevation gain was 3,300 ft and it was pretty rough! It took us 6 hours which included all the breaks. I am not sure what was the hardest part about it, but I think both the up and downhill on boulders. When we were about 60% finished we ran out of water which certainly didn’t help anything. Usually the way down seems easier and faster, but let me just tell you the trail went on and on and on some more. We were so very happy to find our car and when we did, we went straight to eat lots of Mexican Food. After we headed towards the lake and considering how hard the hike was, the freezing cold water didn’t seem so bad after all!

Day 6

We could barely walk the day after our big hike so we were very thankful to head straight to the lake and take it easy. It was July 4th so Lake Tahoe was PACKED! The part of the beach we found, we had to hike to. Ha, not what we were prepared to do, but it was worth it. Thankfully even though there was large number of people we were still able to get a good spot. We mainly just rested, but we both went out on our floats and we got to cliff jump, which is one of our favorite things to do! That afternoon we made the drive to Mammoth Lakes which I will share more about on the next post!

    Oh my gosh! Love this post and always hearing about your travels! I live in Northern California and am sad to say I haven’t even done these hikes myself so this certainly encourages me and makes me want to get out there and try them this summer. 🙂
